A Glossary of Technology Terms

Audio Conference – Meeting from various locations by voice communication, usually by phone. Phone conferencing allows several individuals to be on the call at the same time.

Content Management System (CMS) – Software designed to manage website information in conjunction with a database. A CMS allows changes to the website without requiring programming abilities.

Desktop – The view that a user sees when looking at their computer monitor.

IT – Information Technology; a term used to describe how an organization manages technology resources.

Networking – Sharing files, hardware and other resources across multiple computers.

Open Source – A program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers without licensing or copyright restrictions. Source code is the original code used to create the software.

PDF – Portable Document Format; this is a file format used to share electronic documents.

Plugins – (also called addons or addins) Task specific code used to create or improve functions of other software. Plugins are often created by developers not involved in the creation of the original software.

RSS – Real Simple Syndication (sometimes referred to as Rich Site Summary); A system for sharing website content with subscribers.

Shared Workspace – Sharing files and computer resources through remote connections.

Video Conference – Meeting from various locations with one or more parties viewable by video. This is commonly used for trainings and some collaborative meetings.

Web Conference – Meeting from various locations through the Internet. Participants join the meeting on their computer, and everyone shares a common desktop view. Web conferencing can also include voice communication for all attendees.

Webinar – An online training or presentation using web conferencing services.
